I did it! I have had it on my to do list to update my website for ages, and I finally get to cross that baby off! I thought a good way to kick it off would be to share a session my own family did with the fabulous and fabulously talented (and really great friend) Katrina of Fifty Two Hundred Photo. I am ashamed to admit this. This is the first time (EVER) that we have done a session with another photographer (that is not me). I do a lot of capturing our everyday life, and I have gotten a bit more adept in rigging up tripods and the like to get myself into occasional frames. But, as a family photographer, I felt it was high time I put my money where my mouth is and really experience a family session AS A CLIENT!
First off, prepping. I get it. Dressing 5 different people to coordinate and not match is hard! Insecurities about being in front of a camera, forcing uncooperative 12 year old boys into wearing something other than basketball shorts, finding nice-ish clothes that actually fit your 9 year old who is growing faster than you (or your budget) can keep up with whilst finding an outfit for your teen who has VERY particular thoughts about style but absolutely HATES trying things on. Its hard. I know this now. Feel my empathy. Right here right now.
No one was super excited about being there when we arrived, including the adults, but once we got there, guess what? We actually had fun! The more we moved into the afternoon the more relaxed and like ourselves we became. We chose to do the session at the Eno River in Durham since it is a spot we like to go to together and so that we could BE together and not worry so much about the camera. Yes, photographers worry about being in front of cameras too.
And here’s the best part. When we got the edited gallery from Katrina, we could not stop looking at them! To see ourselves through the eyes of another artist who really sees us as US is such a gift. I know its an investment. Maybe even a luxury item for some. But SO worth the investment for me and my family.
